BOSTON | Boston College has named NFL and college coaching veteran Gary Tranquill its new offensive coordinator.
BC's new head coach, Frank Spaziani, made the announcement Saturday. Tranquill replaces Steve Logan, who resigned after two years at BC. Logan is a former head coach at East Carolina.
Tranquill, 67, has worked under several big name coaches, including Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Woody Hayes. Tranquill was the head coach at the U.S. Naval Academy for five years, beginning in 1982. He later became the quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns between 1991-93, while Belichick was head coach there
Tranquill has worked as the offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Virginia and North Carolina.
Most recently, he served as quarterbacks coach for the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe in 2007.

Stricker makes big move at hope
LA QUINTA, Calif. | Steve Stricker shot a 10-under-par 62 to overtake Pat Perez as he went to 33 under through four rounds of the Bob Hope Classic.
Eight shots behind Perez after 36 holes, Stricker shot a 61 during the third round to move into contention, and his sparkling play during the fourth day gave him a three-shot lead over Perez, the leader each of the previous three rounds.
Stricker bettered the tour's 72-hole mark of 31 under set by Ernie Els in winning the 2003 Mercedes Classic. Stricker's 61-62 also is a tour low for consecutive rounds.
Bubba Watson (63), Robert Garrigus (66) and Vaughn Taylor (68) are seven shots off the lead at 262.

schottenheimer to stay with Jets
NEW YORK | Brian Schottenheimer will stay with the New York Jets to run the offense despite losing out to Rex Ryan for the head coaching job.
Schottenheimer has been the Jets' offensive coordinator for three seasons, but it was uncertain if he would stay after Ryan was hired.
The 35-year-old Schottenheimer, a former Redskins assistant and the son of former Browns, Chiefs, Redskins and Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer, had a year remaining on his contract and reportedly received an extension, but the team would not comment on the deal Saturday.

Steelers tight end Jonathan Dekker was arrested early Saturday in Alexandria, and charged with obstruction of justice. Dekker, who injured his knee in August and spent the season on injured reserve, was released on $1,000 bond, police said.

a's, right-hander reach 1-year deal
OAKLAND, Calif. | The Athletics agreed to terms on a $3.9 million, one-year contract with right-hander Justin Duchscherer, the club's last remaining roster player eligible for arbitration.
The two-time All-Star, sidelined by a strained right hip late in the season that required arthroscopic surgery, went 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA in 22 starts last season - his first year as a full-time starter after spending most of his career as a setup man.

kentucky guard OK after collapse
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Kentucky guard Ramon Harris collapsed outside the team's locker room at halftime of its 61-51 victory over Alabama on Saturday and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.
A Kentucky spokesman said Harris was released from the hospital in the early evening and was traveling home with the team.

HAMPTON | In his first collegiate meet, Norfolk State freshman Vincent Rono set a school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 33.15 seconds during the Hampton Invitational at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
Rono's time eclipsed the old mark by .81 of a second.
